Chapman

The name Chapman is from the old language spoken by the Angles.  This Germanic tribe made its entrance upon the island of Britain in the seventh century.  Combining with the Saxons already in Britain the Angles soon controlled the island and absorbed the Jutes into Anglo Saxon life.

The ancestors of the Chapmans were inhabitants of Britain for many centuries.  It is not possible to tell if they were Angles, Saxons, Jutes or Celts as the whole of Britain had been required to use the new language long before the dawn of last names.

Chapman was never a clan name, it describes the occupation of a person.  Chap [ceap] and man are the two parts and it was used to indicate a peddler, tradesman or merchant.  This is perhaps one of the most ambiguous and common of names as one can not tell the class of life as it could he the richest merchant to the poorest peddler and every town had to have a least a couple of chapmans.
