Osborn(e)

This medieval English surname has ancient 'Viking' origins.

This modern surname derives from the Norse personal name 'Asbiorn' which is composed of the elements 'As' meaning god and 'Bjorn' the bear. The Vikings, in keeping with their warlike image, often used names that indicated strength and conquest. The name was in use in England and Normandy well before the Norman Conquest of 1066, and was laso recorded in Normandy.

In the Olde English (pre 11th Century) the spelling was 'Osbern' and this spelling as a given name is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book.

While an occasional record for the known family is spelt Osborne or Osburn the majority of records are Osborn.  The family was literate in the 1700s so we will stick with that spelling, but look under all variations for further records.

To date the family of Thomas Osborne has not been identified but there are many pointers to the Eastham, NY families.
